How-To: Flour Sack Screen!

The new Spring/Summer issue of Flea Market Style is beginning to make its way in to the hands of readers! We promised you directions for making this great flour sack room screen from Page 103. It was designed by Ki, with sewing by Nancy Polacek and construction by Cammie. They've done the work to make it a fun and simple project for you!

Here's how to make it:

Materials:

:: 2 window screens the same size

:: 4 3/8'' threaded rod the width of your screen

:: 4 3/8'' wood plugs

:: 6 feet of 1'' x 2'' wood

:: Hinges

Tools:

:: Screws

:: Drill

Step A

On the inside edge of the top and bottom of the screen drill 3/8'' holes three-quarters of the way through the inside edge of the screen, so that the end of the rod will fit into the hole but not come out on the other side. Repeat on the second screen.

Step B

On the outside edge of the top and bottom of the screen drill 3/8'' holes all the way through the outside edge of the screen, so that the rod will run all the way through the side of the screen.

Step C

Take the threaded rod and run through the outside edge of the screen to the other side, sliding into the hole on the other side; mark rod on the outside edge of the screen.

Step D

Remove the rod and cut it 3/8'' shorter than the mark. This is so the rod will be inside the frame of the screen. Repeat on second screen.

Step E

Attach hinges to the back side of the two screens, one at the top and one at the bottom.

Step F

To make legs for screens, cut three pieces of wood, one that is 12'' long and two that are 6'' long.

Step G

Measure the thickness of your screen. This is the amount of space you will need between the two 6'' pieces of wood. Attach the two 6'' pieces of wood to the 12'' piece

of bood, centering them on the 12'' piece of wood on end, leaving a space between them for the screen to fit in to.

Step H

Drill pilot hole, screw together. Repeat three times for each leg.

Step I

Leg will then slide over the screen at the bottom left, middle and right.

Step J

Paint to match color of screen you have chosen.

Step K

Slide fabric curtain over threaded rod at top and bottom; put rod back into holes in the screen.

Step L

Place wood cap plugs in the outside holes of the screen, to finish and hold rod in place.
