Ki's (Working) Texas Vacation

I'm so glad that I talked Ki to coming down to Texas to visit me again, and to appear at my favorite antique and junk spot, Winnie & Tulula's in Athens, Texas. That's where she signed copies of the latest issue of Flea Market Style.

(Watch this blog for more info later this week on another appearance; Ki and Senior Editor/Photographer Heather Bullard are attending The Farm Chicks Antique Show in Spokane, Wash., June 4-5!)

Ki said her goal for the Texas trip was "all play and no work." Here she is, working, reviewing articles for the fall issue. It was lovely, slightly-cool spring weather, great for junking fun.

She casually asked if I knew anyone who had a collection of ??????. I knew just who to call so we could scout merchandise. Ki snapped a few pics to send to her team, who gave them rave reviews. So off to California they went, destined for the Fall issue. I'm sure you'll love them, too, but I can't tell you what they are... just yet.

We visited with mutual junking friends on Ki's first day here, and Ki helped to load this large mirror. Ki is a packing pro and this job was finished fast. Then off to a great lunch and dessert. I love small towns and their quaint little bistros.
Thanks V & M for the fabulous food and fun afternoon.

Day 2 we headed to Canton First Monday for a few quick hours. On the way we stopped at a church rummage sale, where I found the perfect crown for our junk queen.

Ki is attracted to the strangest things, like this lamp, below (it looks suspiciously like one I had when growing up).

She was not attracted to this little item though, and I can't say that I blame her. You won't be seeing this in the magazine any time soon.

As my cart and arms began to fill, I recruited Ki to pull the cart. She's handy to have around.

We met up with Wanda, a friend to all junkers. She has been a junk supplier to
Ki for many years.

Ki's trip was scheduled around two appearances at Winnie & Tulula's. Here owner Gloria, Ki and I goof off for the camera on a beautiful bed, dressed by Gloria from her Sweet Pea Collection.

Ever gracious, Ki gave everyone her undivided attention, whether she was talking about junk, selling, swapping stories and of course... signing books.

We are so thankful to Ki for visiting us in Texas, and I always enjoy hosting and spending extra time with her.

If you missed her in Texas, there is always The Farm Chicks show. Details coming this week.

On Location: Tales from the South

Hello Readers! It's Heather here and I'm so happy to drop in today to share what I've been up to behind the scenes. Mainly...lots of travel and photoshoots! Props have been shipped from all over the country to my warehouse to gear up for the many shoots and I just returned from a beautiful trip to the beloved South where I shot an incredible farmhouse for the fall issue.

My trusty cell phone came in handy as a quick way to document my trip highlights. One of which was the long, wandering country roads and highways on the way to the location. They were scattered with lush trees, blooming wildflowers and old country churches.

Location shoots take days to complete. Usually the first day is "Prep Day," where I survey the feel of the place (since I've only seen it from scouting shots) and then make a game plan to purchase remaining props, such as fresh flowers and food, etc. Of course, this also involves stopping at any small-town antique store I might come across. That's where all the good stuff is!

From this little shop I picked up a few things for myself: an English ironstone platter, a military laundry bag and a jade necklace. Small souvenirs from my trip that will tuck into my luggage. Next stop...a lunch break!

There was a great Italian place that served wood-fired pizzas and delicious salads. The perfect fuel needed to finish the day! After that it was back to the location where something strange happened...

I smelled gas. And not from anyone's lunch! ;-) The real gas leak kind of gas. I had smelled it earlier and dismissed it but when I came back it was still there. The homeowner called the gas company who came out to find a very bad leak, which they capped. The homeowner never smelled any of the gas and said she wondered why her previous month's bill was more than $500!
Once the crisis was averted, the shoot continued for the next few days. Room by room, all the shots were captured and I know you will LOVE this story!

With the shoot complete, my traveling circus was packed up and I headed for the long drive back to the airport. Maybe on my next visit to the South I will stop by the little town of Bullard! I bet there are some lovely farmhouses there!
I hope you enjoyed my little Report from the Road!
Cheers!

Workspace envy! Share your solutions

Does anyone ever have enough space to work on projects?
As someone who has a three-piece project for the fall edition of Flea Market Style mag spread out all over the sunroom, I guess the answer is ''no!"

Don't we always covet more room for our paint cans, electric staplers, drill bits, wood putty, spray adhesives and that bucket of old zinc Mason jar lids with which we just couldn't bear to part?!

My stuff is also all over the garage, the living room, the dining room table AND my official workroom, and still, there's not enough room to contain the flotsam and jetsam!

(All this despite my best efforts to segregate buttons, pins, clips and other small bits into individual, stacking plastic cheese-slice containers!)

But take a look at this rolling workstation, above, and you'll get a real idea of how space can be economized!

This is Ki's Workshop on Wheels (my name, not hers. She might instead call it the Elephant in the Living Room) !

Her fabulous Los Angeles digs are truly cool, but also short on space for tools and projects.
She has resorted to stashing all matter of stuff on this cool rolling cart (one of her first flea market purchases after hitting town). Then, a sheet keeps the clutter from becoming the prime topic of discussion when company visits.

In true FMS style, she's making the best of what's at hand!

How about you?

What's your best storage tip for the stuff that fuels your Flea Market Style?!

Can you Say it in a Bumper Sticker?

If you could put your junking philosophy on a bumper sticker, what would it say?

Inquiring minds, and Flea Market Style magazine, want to know!

The FMS team is looking for feedback for the fall issue!

What's your answer?

To submit your suggestions, send an email to fleamarketstylemag@hotmail.com with “BUMPER STICKER” in the subject line.

About that great bumper sticker above? It graces Ki's truck, a gift years ago from Mary Randolph Carter, flea market maven extraordinaire, and author of multitudinous books on junk!

(you can order one here, at www.carterjunk.com/html/shopping.html#, should you covet one for your very own!)

Drop us a line! We can't wait to hear your junking mantra!
