Junkers Defined

In our experience there are 3 types of Junkers. So let's clear things up with some definitions.

Junker #1 "The Shopper" likes to peruse antique stores and sales for that unusual vintage treasure that speaks to their heart. Usually drawn to specific items they collect. They see it, buy it, take it home and love it. Attire is most often fashionable and clean.

For the gals, shoes are stylish and clothing is on trend and pressed. Hair and make up are in place at all times. Approach with caution when spotted shopping, as she is single minded, focused and easily startled.

Junker #2 "The Junker" roams the rows at a flea market, or follows a lead to someone's recent haul. Doesn't mind digging down in the dirty boxes, under the tables, behind over and under piles of this and that, looking for that treasure that makes their heart jump for joy, while they try to contain there excitement as they ask for the price. Never mind the years of dirt, it's perfect, and they know it.

They take it home & clean it. Then they either find the perfect spot in their home, or add it to their stash of stuff that they will haul from booth to booth & sale to sale, waiting for junker #1 to fall in love with it and take it home. Usually seen in comfortable yet non flattering clothing and sensible shoes. Stains, rips and paint droplets can be found on most of their clothing, and on the female junker, make-up is at a minimum. When shopping approach with caution. This junker will stake claim to their stash and hold firm until the deal is struck.

Junker #3 "The Picker" We adore pickers, they are the ones that scour the countryside, rummaging around in folks barns, out buildings and even digging in old trash heaps, looking for the perfect item, that junker #1 or #2 will just love. They don't clean it, many times they don't even price it.

They haul it from flea market to flea market until #1 or #2 finds it. "Pickers" are usually tanned from lots of time outside in the elements, hands are calloused, and smiles are friendly. No caution needed, as the picker is a friend to everyone, especially folks ready to buy.

Sometimes the lines between these three types of junkers is blurry, Many of us falling into all three categories at one time or another. What type of junker are you?

I am usually dressed up,because I love clothes and have no problem at all picking through an old barn:) Dirt is my middle name! I take things home, sometimes repurpose them, sometimes love them for their natural aged beauty. I am always on the hunt:)

Great article! I think I'm a cross between 1 & 2. Like Debra (above), I love clothes, and since I wear a uniform at work, love the opportunity the weekend brings to express myself through my clothing. I constantly look for just the right item to add to a collection or a spot in my home that needs a special something. That said, I'm also a digger. My favorite word is "FREE", and I'll stop by the roadside and start digging anytime I see that magic word! At yard sales and flea markets I'll scour piles of junk for hours sometimes looking for things I can repurpose and find a place for in my home, often while my friends look on in exasperation! I seldom return home as neat and clean as I was when I left! Regards, Sheilla

I would have to say I'm between 1 & 2. I like to dig but I only wear my painting clothes at home! I would love to have more chances to be a 3!

I've ruined a good pedicure with overspray while I was painting!

I'm a combo of one and two with an occasional lucky day of number three!

I must say I'm between number 1 and 2. However given the chance I could be a 3 no problem

Me I'm definitely at #2. I can be seen at FM in my most comfortable and quite a bit worn jeans, t-shirt, and my waterproof garden clogs (to trample through the wet grass early in the morning). I work in a office all week so when the weekend finally arrives-its jeans, t-shirts and NO makeup. I love to rummage through the "goodies" under the table rather than what's displayed on top. LuAnn

I would be both 1&2! As long as your not considered a "HOARDER" and end up on a tv show with your family surrounding you trying to help you with your "problem" ITS ALL GOOD! PICK and JUNK on my friends!

Wow! I can relate! I do wear nice clothes and sometimes have a definite agenda while browsing- but... the fantastic mirror above my bathtub that has gotten so much love on my blog is a piece I climbed in the most disgusting, dirty, dark, spiderwebby abandoned antique store to pull out!! Ohhh the finds in that place!! If I had unlimited storage, I would have dragged out a TON of things! But, I admit, when I came back the next day to rummage around again, I packed some latex gloves! I am kind of a germaphob believe it or not! So, kind of a mix here too! :)

I admit I am a #2 Junker! The clothes don't matter but I also will admit to wearing makeup...I could scare people without it! I love the hunt and finding things I can spruce up and sell.(some do stay at my house)

Definitely a JUNKER. I NEVER dress up for junking! And you're right—makeup at a minimum!

Antiques Galore Gal said...

Depends on the day, I guess I could be any of the three! Most of the time though, I'm #2, with make up! I don't even take the trash out without make up. lol!

#2 for sure, but dipping my toes into #3 on occasion. I'll dig thru almost anything to get to a treasure but ALWAYS have disinfectant wipes in the van and have been known to drop my clothes in the laundry room on my way into the house.

I guess I don't mind getting dirty but I can't stand being dirty!

#2 definitely. I've been known to dumpster dive and pick stuff up along the road. The dirtier and chippier, the better ;)

I like to think I start as #1 at the beginning of the day. As the day wears on I turn into #2. Somehow I always have a stain on my shirt by the end of a Saturday :)

I am a cross between all 3. I buy things for myself and I also sell items. I pick alot on curbs and garage sales.

Cute article!~ I guess I am in between 1 and 2 ..... not a full fledge #2 as I am too busy hunting to find time to sell anything ;O) Have not quit found it in my heart to get rid of any of my fun finds yet either but pretty sure the hubby is on the edge of making that happen ;O) If I did not have a 5 year old I would be #3 so maybe when she is grown but for now I sneak in my excursions when I can. Though much more difficult for me she loves to come along and find her own treasures!! I am teaching her young ;O) Oh and though I could care less what I am wearing or how dirty I get.... I must wear makeup.... or maybe I should stop so I can scare all the other shoppers away... hehe!!! ;O)

lol! I'm a #2 and a #3, my mom and my gramma raised me that way. My Boyfriend is a #1, sometimes a #2, depending on the subject matter (if it's anything relating to old VW's, he'll go to #3)...for about ten minutes or until it get's boring for him. I can be a hardcore #3 sometimes, when I "know" there's something good when/where I'm picking.

AMKreations said...

Wow, you really have it! I love it because I'm a Junker...I was just at the flea market Monday, digging through the Picker's $.25 boxes! And yes, I did find a few nice things to bring home....so what can you say...it's worth it!

hmmm I am a mix of #1 and #2 depending on the day and my mood. Being new to ALL of this tho, I don't care what kind of Junker I am... I just love junk..... I mean treasure....

I'm mostly a cross between #1 and #2 but can easily be a #3! Thank goodness I don't have a garage or I'd really be in trouble! :)

thehillbillies said...

Oh, I'm SO not #1!!! I'm #3 with some #2 mixed in. Who else goes to What Cheer with their fashion apparel consisting of rubber boots and garbage bags to find the goodies!

Courtney said...

Number 2, right here! Though I tend towards number 3 when I have my boyfriend with me. He encourages the down and dirty pick - and has no qualms about lugging things from trash piles home for me.

#1 but without the stylish shoes.

Oh, I am a junker #3 alright! I never dress up for flea marketing... don't want to look like the girl from the big city when I'm asking what the best price is!

Pam said...

I am totally a #1. I wish I could be a little more like #2 and rummage through things to find the diamond in the rough. I would probably get better prices that way.
Although, shopping for antiques and things in a flea market is a leisure activity for me.

annieb said...

I'm a #2 but could happily be a #3 - maybe someday.

I am definitely a combo between #1 and #2. If I'm determined to find that puppy, I am on my hands and knees getting dirty!

Plus I collect heart shelves and I'm always on the mad hunt for them!!!

Most often #2, unless I'm dressed up on my way somewhere and run into a great yard sale - clothes won't stop me from getting down and dirty looking for that special something!

There are clothes with no paint spatter on them?

Mona Kay at Home said...

Yep....I'm all three depending on the venue :) The only thing I don't like to do is buy at retail prices, because I just can't help thinking if they can find it, eventually so can I!!

Miss Mustard Seed said...

I'm definitely a "two", but I do have "one" days as well. There are times I want to buy something that I don't have to clean, sand, paint, refinish, repair, repeat.

Oh...this was a good one!
I am for the most part No# 2, though I feel more confident when I wear makeup and wear my less ripped clothes. I dicker better that way!
Then again, I can climb in the dirtiest barns and sheds, sift though dirt and debris years thick in search of the unknown! I also like to buy stuff and resell it before I clean it, so I have of No# 3 in me.
But I might be a No# 4
Buy it, try to get it past my daughter so that she doesn't say, "Oh, I love that, can I have it!!?"
Thus I make no money on the bargain that I have found! Darn it!
