Flea Market Style: July 2009

Matthew loves summer and all that it brings, and spends many summer evenings enjoying his outdoor patio with family and friends. Comfortable outdoor seating, a crackling fire, a few marshmallows to toast, and lantern lighting make for a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy warm summer nights and the company of good friends.

This summer lantern project is both affordable and easy. Most of us have a vintage (or new)lantern or two kicking around that has seen better days. If needed, refresh it with a coat of metal paint and a few sheets of scrapbook paper or wallpaper scraps. Use two sheets of paper back-to-back against the outside of the glass. Spray adhesive or double-sided tape will hold things in place. Paper all four sides of the lantern, including the door, and pop in a small tea light set safely into a glass votive. Hang multiple lanterns over a patio table, from tree branches, or inside your home - on your dining table or placed around a room - for just the right amount of flickering, summer light.
