Shoestrings and Heartstrings
There was a time when magazine stories had budgets...when there was actually money for fresh flowers and props and last minute items, and when graphic designers and writers and stylists were just simply part of the whole package.
"Those were the good old days" as folks say and for Flea Market Style we are literally flying without a net. It is good in some ways: we are forced to look at design with realistic boundaries. No trips into New York to attend trendy design shows or vetting our ideas through high end dealers who are trying to show off their wares in the glossy pages of a magazine. Our tips and ideas, as well as the items we are using to prop and decorate with, come from a place accessible to everyone. It is stuff you will find at the flea market because that's really where we found it. Our style and design is real because we are real.
Life is good when the work is good is a mantra that the whole FMS team shares. We all agreed to create the magazine because of the great group of people involved. There will not be great riches exchanged in the end for all of the hard work put in. It is a labor of love whereby each team member is garnering different things. Some of us will be published in a "hard copy" format for the first time. One is involved because it fits her life and her ability to be at home with her kids. Another told Ki and me that she would have "done it for nothing because she was getting to work with us." There are photographers, stylists, writers, bloggers all giving of themselves freely because they want to be part of something new, something big and something beautiful. I am moved beyond words to have so many talented, giving, creative people on my side. I am truly blessed.
Ultimately, it is the flea market spirit that we will truly end up capturing because we are living it: we are bartering, trading, investing in something that will ultimately become more and more valuable as it grows. This magazine has an energy to create itself and that is something you just can't fabricate. It is palpable, pulsating, and plowing ahead on its own because it has such a strong purpose. I truly believe that the best ideas are born on a shoestring and I, for one, am grateful for those kinds of restrictions.

I am very excited to see the first publication and many more after that! I have been waiting for a magazine that is all about keeping it "real" and I am sure there are many out there that feel the same! I think this is going to be big and can't wait to see all the creativity. Sometimes when you have to be frugal that is when the best ideas come to life. Love reading your posts and look forward to visiting often.
Thank you!

Congrats to Jocelyn! Have a blast filling that cart up at the next flea market! What fun!
Matthew, I enjoyed your passionate post so much!
It's way past my bed time right now, but all of a sudden I feel so energized after reading your wonderful words! :-)

All I can say is WOW! And Thanks for a great giveaway. I've been thrifting for most of my life, mostly because of financial situations growing up. But even when I didn't "need" to, I have found that a lot of people throw away good and useful things. The hunt for the treasure makes it fun and exciting. Your magazine is riding the coattails of your banner. Flea Market style fuels beauty, creativity, and thriftiness. What better components for a magazine?
Thanks again.

As someone who works in publishing (for my big grrl job), I know how exciting, daunting, and challenging it can be in today's world. I am SO looking forward to FMS, which will fill a much-needed void in the junking world.
You're already successful, as success cannot always be measured by advertising revenue and circulation numbers; you're speaking to our souls!

P.S. Personally, I cannot thank you enough for publishing the behind-the-scenes "news"!
Your new publication is such a breath of fresh air. So real, so touchable and so today. Life is good when the work is good has always been my mantra I just didn't always know it. LOL This post makes me want to start cutting on that bolt of vintage fabric I found at the local thrift store last week. Thanks for the inspiration!

PERFECT POST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where to we sign up to get on board this fantastic adventure?
Seriously, there is so much inspiration to be found among bloggers today. Is there a way we can submit articles, photos or ideas?
I so appreciate these words -- they are inspiring -- a true message of the heart.
When I leave a flea market, I often have to have my goodies unbagged, unwrapped -- all "my guys" tucked safely in the back -- just a rear-view mirror look away.
I thank you for loading us all up in your car, too --- so we can enjoy & appreciate your adventure-this adventure of building a new magazine. If you need us to lift you at the end of a day -- just look in your "rearview mirror" -- there we are!

love ...a girl on a shoestring too!
I just wish I could do more. My part was done with, before it even started. I'm up for more if there is a need.
Love the behind-the-scenes blog too, what a great idea.

I really enjoyed reading your post. The passion behind the magazine is what will propel it to success. It is obvious to 454 followers of this blog (and sure to be 100's more) that you all believe in what you are creating. That is what will make a great (and successful) magazine.
what a wonderfully heartfelt post. the collective labor of love is already evident and i am rooting for FMS all the way!

I just purchased Flea Market Style last night. I went to the store for a few things and always browse magazines and books. It's rare aside from Better Homes and Gardens that I find a magazine catering to DIY and Flea Market finds. The title and the cover drew me in immediately. I was a bit put off by the price but I knew I wouldn't let that deter me from purchasing it.
On the cover the colors were exactly my kind; warm, cheerful, playful, and fun. Plus as a single mother of two on a limited income I'm always looking for ways to make our home our own without spending ridiculous amounts of money on items that most people have. Which is why I love the magazine, it's a great way to inspire readers to find items that are as unique as they are. Thank you for a great publication!
